One of my Plug and Post members slid into my DMs not too long ago. She had a reel that brought 2,500 profile visits to her page. Not impressions, not views. Actual people who clicked all the way through to check out her account after watching her content.
She got about 10 follows from it.
Something between “click to profile” and “hit follow” was completely breaking down. And when I looked at her page, I found it pretty quickly. Here’s the thing though: this is way more common than people realize, and it’s almost never a content problem.
Your Profile Is a Storefront, Not a Formality
Most people treat their profile like something they filled out once when they first set up their account. You picked a photo, wrote something in the bio, and then got to the actual work of creating content. Maybe you never really looked at it again.
But here’s what’s happening every single day: every time someone new finds you through a reel, a share, a collab, or word of mouth, they land on your profile and make a split-second decision.
Follow or don’t follow. DM or keep scrolling. Click the link or close the app entirely.
Your content gets them there. Your profile is what keeps them or loses them. And most profiles are quietly losing people every day without the account owner even realizing it.
What a Profile Fix Actually Does
I recently finished a VIP profile build and have another one I’m currently working through. These are intensive sessions where I come in and build out the entire Instagram funnel for a client, including their strategy, profile, and offers.
One of my past VIP clients, Missy, is someone I come back to a lot when I explain this. She creates content about incorporating neurology into healthcare practice. Her content was getting a ton of profile visits, but the follows weren’t coming.
When we dug into her profile, we found the disconnect. Her content was landing with a general audience, everyday people curious about health and the brain. But her profile clearly stated that she was posting for professionals like physical therapists and athletic trainers. So someone who just found her through a relatable reel would click over, read “for professionals,” assume it wasn’t for them, and leave.
We fixed the profile. She didn’t change her content dramatically. She went from 9,000 followers to 25,000, and now she’s at over 200,000. One profile fix.
The 5 Parts of Your Profile That Each Have a Job
Your profile isn’t just background information. Every section has a specific purpose, and when they all work together, the page converts.
Your Name Field
This is not just where you put your name. Your name field is one of the most searchable fields on the entire platform.
When someone types something like “Instagram coach,” “nutritionist for moms,” or “lactation consultant” into the search bar, Instagram pulls from your name field first. If yours just has your first and last name and nothing else, you’re invisible in search to anyone who doesn’t already know you exist.
Your name field should have your name AND a keyword that describes what you do or who you help. It’s your searchability tool and your first impression all in one.
Your Handle
Keep it simple. If you’re a personal brand or solopreneur, use some version of your name. If you have a business name that makes more sense, go with that. The goal is something easy to spell, easy to remember, and easy to find if someone hears it out loud somewhere like a podcast.
Your Bio
This is where most profiles fall completely flat.
The most common mistake I see, even in the VIP builds I do with really smart, credentialed people, is writing the bio for yourself instead of for your audience. Listing your credentials, your certifications, the things you love. It feels personal and real, but it doesn’t actually answer the one question the person standing on your profile is asking.
Your bio has one job: answer “what’s in it for me if I follow this account?”
That’s it. It should be clear, specific, and outcome-focused. Not “I help women feel confident” but something more like “helping you build confidence through career changes, motherhood, and the messy in-between moments.” Give them something tangible. Something they can point to and say “that’s actually me.”
Keywords matter in your bio too. Use the words your audience is actually typing when they search for help with what you do.
And if you have one line of trust-building, whether it’s a credential, a student count, or a result you’ve gotten people, include it. One line. Then get back to what’s in it for them.
Your Highlights
Think of your highlights like a mini website.
The people who click into your highlights are usually not brand-new visitors still deciding if they should follow. They’re warmer. They’re the ones thinking about buying something, working with you, or getting more from you. So treat them accordingly.
Some highlight categories that work really well:
- About you or your brand and why you got started
- Client love and testimonials
- How people can work with you
- A free resource they can grab
- Your most helpful tips or content
- A “featured in” highlight if you’ve been on podcasts or done speaking
Your highlights should always guide action. To a free resource, to a paid offer, or deeper into learning who you are.
Your Pinned Posts
These are prime real estate and most people waste them by just pinning their most-viewed content, which sounds logical but isn’t actually helpful to a new visitor.
Your three pinned posts each need to do a specific job. Here’s the structure I use for my VIP clients:
Post 1: Introduce you. A meet-me or why-I-started-this post, ideally a carousel that takes a new visitor through your story quickly. This is the fastest way to get someone to feel like they actually know you.
Post 2: Your free offer. If you have something people can opt into to get on your email list, this pin drives that. If you don’t have a free offer, use your highest-save piece of content instead. Saves tell you what people actually found valuable, not just what the algorithm pushed.
Post 3: Your paid offer. A post that explains what you offer, who it’s for, and how someone gets started. If you do high-ticket, this one might point to a discovery call. If you have a lower-ticket product, this is where new visitors learn how to buy from you.
The Fastest Fixes to Start With
If you’re looking at your profile right now and realizing it needs work, start with two things: your bio and your pinned posts.
Every single time I do a VIP build, these are the pieces that show results the fastest. Not because the other stuff doesn’t matter, but because these two are usually the most broken and the easiest to improve quickly.
Once those are solid, work through the rest.
Your Profile Audit (Do This Right Now)
Pull up your profile like you’re a complete stranger seeing it for the first time. Ask yourself:
- Does my name field have a keyword, or just my name?
- Does my bio tell someone what they’ll get from following me, or does it describe who I am?
- Are my highlights current, organized, and leading somewhere?
- Are my three pinned posts each doing a specific job?
If the answer to any of those is “not really,” you know exactly what to fix first.
Recap
- Your profile is a storefront that works 24/7. Your content drives traffic to it. The profile keeps them or loses them.
- Your name field is searchable. Use a keyword, not just your name.
- Your bio should answer “what’s in it for me?” and include one trust-building line.
- Your highlights are for warm visitors who are thinking about buying or learning more.
- Your three pinned posts each have a job: introduce you, offer something free, guide to your paid offer.
- Start with your bio and your pinned posts if you’re not sure where to begin.
Action Challenge
Open your profile and read your bio out loud like you’ve never seen this account before. Ask yourself: does this tell someone exactly what they get if they follow me?
If the answer is no, or even “kind of,” that’s your one thing to fix this week. Rewrite it with one clear outcome your audience actually cares about.
If you want to do this yourself and want a step-by-step guide, the DIY profile kit walks through my exact audit process and how to write every section of your profile from scratch. And if you want me to build it out for you, my VIP profile build is where we do the whole thing together. I only take one client a month for those, so if you’re curious, DM me the word VIP on Instagram and we can chat more from there.
