Last week we talked about AI and how Instagram is starting to label content as “AI info.” Because of AI, there’s about to be a ton more content being pumped out constantly. So it can feel like we need to pump out more content too. But when solopreneurs try to match that pace, quality usually drops.
So today I want to break down what good, authentic content actually looks like right now, the exact content types that are performing well because they show a real human behind the account, without requiring you to burn yourself out trying to keep up.
What “Real Human Content” Actually Means
I don’t think authentic content is as simple as “post more casually” or “stop editing your videos.” It’s more specific than that.
Right now, the content that performs has a visible personal layer. Your actual voice. Your actual specific experience. Your actual opinion. It’s not about ditching structure completely, it’s about not sounding replaceable.
Here’s an easy way to feel the difference. “Five tips for better sleep” could be posted by anybody. But “the 9pm habit that was wrecking my sleep for months and I didn’t even realize it,” that’s specific. That’s lived. Nobody else could’ve posted that exact line the same way.
There’s a trust piece underneath this too. When your audience feels like they know you, not just your business, that relationship is what gets people to stick around, engage, and eventually buy. That connection doesn’t come from polished content. It comes from the stuff that feels a little exposed.
Long-form, detailed storytelling and vulnerability are actually outperforming short, punchy captions right now. One practical way to use this: if you’ve got a longer reel, keep the caption short. If your reel or carousel is short, let the caption carry more of the story. Don’t stack long-form on top of long-form, that’s just too much.
Two Formats Doing This Really Well Right Now
The Highlight Reel vs. Reality Carousel
This one’s been trending for a year, year and a half, and it keeps coming back in waves. Right now we’re in another wave of it.
Slide one is the hook: “Instagram is a highlight reel, so here’s what I’ve actually been struggling with lately,” or “Instagram’s only for sharing the wins, so here are some of my recent failures.” It works because it names something your audience already suspects about social media, that they’re only seeing part of the picture, and then the carousel actually follows through and shows them the rest.
How to build it:
- Slide one names the gap directly, using the hook format above
- Each slide after that is one specific struggle, not vague. “I lost my biggest client this month and struggled to find a replacement” lands. “Things have been hard lately” doesn’t
- Stay honest without tipping into doom and gloom, and don’t fish for reassurance, just state what happened
- Close with where you’re at now or what you’re doing about it, this is what turns it from a vent into an update
The Talking Head Ramble
Exactly what it sounds like. Get on camera, no script, no outline, and just talk through something for as long as it takes. Then cut it down to the good part.
How to build it:
- Pick a question you get asked all the time, or something that’s been sitting on your mind
- Hit record and talk, five minutes, ten minutes, however long it takes. Don’t worry about tangents or repeating yourself
- Pull the transcript afterward and find the two minutes that say it best. That section is almost never the intro, it’s usually somewhere in the middle
- Trim to that part, add captions, maybe a text hook at the start, then post
- The pauses and the “let me figure out how to say this” moments aren’t flaws here, they’re what makes it feel real
One Important Boundary
This is not permission to overshare constantly. Your business page doesn’t need to become a diary, and you’re not performing vulnerability for engagement. This is about closing the gap between the version of you people see online and the version of you actually running the business day to day. You decide what feels safe to share, every time. If a full post feels like too much, share it in stories instead, it expires in 24 hours and only your most engaged followers will see it.
Recap
- Real human content means your actual voice and specific experience sitting on top of anything you use to help create it
- The highlight reel vs. reality carousel names the gap your audience already suspects, then follows through on showing the real picture
- The talking head ramble works because the rawness is the point, not a flaw to edit out
- You control what you share, there’s no requirement to share everything
Your Action Challenge
Pick one of these two formats and try it this week. If the ramble feels scary to post as a full reel, try it as a story first. Either way, resist the urge to over-polish before you hit post. Let it stay a little rough.
