If you’ve been around here for any amount of time, you know exactly what kind of content makes me lose it a little. It’s the “change these 3 settings and go viral” reels. It’s the “follow me, unfollow me, like this, save this, follow me again” reels. It’s the stuff that promises you 10,000 followers if you just find the secret toggle switch nobody told you about.
I can’t stand it. Not because I’m judging anyone who’s tried it, but because it doesn’t work, and it’s actively hurting the accounts that fall for it.
So today I want to walk you through the growth hacks I want you to stop falling for, and what to do instead.
This Isn’t On You
First, I want to normalize something. If you’ve watched those reels, saved them, or even tried the tactics, that’s not you being gullible. We’ve all been trained by this platform to chase the quick fix.
When you’ve been posting and posting and not seeing the growth you want, a hook that says “here’s the one thing you’re missing” is going to hit you right where you’re already anxious. Of course you’re going to click it. Of course part of you wants it to be true.
It’s just not.
The 4 Growth Hacks to Stop Falling For
1. The Magic Setting
These are the creators telling you that changing one or two settings in your profile is going to unlock viral reach. The truth is, most of those settings are already turned on by default when you switch to a public or professional account. Flipping a switch is not going to suddenly make Instagram push your content out to more people. It’s just not how the algorithm works.
2. The Follow, Unfollow, Self-Share Loop
You’ve seen this one. Follow me, like this post, unfollow me, unlike the post, share it with yourself, follow me again, save it. It creates a huge burst of engagement for the creator asking for it, which is exactly why it can go viral. But if you try this on your own account, here’s what actually happens. You grow in numbers, but the people doing it don’t care about your content. They’re just chasing the same shortcut you were. They’ll disengage or unfollow within a few months, and you’re left with a bloated follower count and a tanking engagement rate.
3. Keyword Stuffing
This one used to work on old school Google blogs and on Pinterest, so people assumed it would work the same way on Instagram. Cramming a pile of keywords into your caption, or shrinking tiny text into the corner of your screen, reads as robotic. Instagram now flags this as spammy content instead of rewarding it. So instead of getting pushed out further, it’s actually working against you.
4. Engagement Pods
Most people know these are bad news, but if you’re in one, this is your sign to start backing away. Engagement pods create fake engagement from the same small group of people, day after day. The second that pod breaks up, or a few people in it go inactive, your engagement drops fast, and it’s genuinely hard to recover from.
What Actually Works Instead
Here’s what I want you to do instead of chasing any of the four hacks above.
Think about your one person. Picture your best friend who has the exact problem you help with. What does she need to hear from you today? What’s one thing you could teach her right now that would make her feel more confident or capable?
Ask your audience directly. In your caption, ask “was this helpful?” or “want to see more like this?” People respond when you ask them straight up.
Tease what’s coming. Let people know you’ll be talking more about a topic over the next couple weeks. It hints at “follow me” without ever having to say it.
Write like a human, then layer in keywords. Say what you actually want to say first. Then go back and naturally work in the words your audience is searching for. This is where AI is genuinely useful. Word vomit your caption, then ask it to weave in your keywords while keeping it conversational.
Reframe This For Yourself
You have not missed some secret setting. These hacks were never actually the answer, they’re just a shortcut that doesn’t even work. What works right now is what has always worked. Real, useful, honest content. That’s what the algorithm rewards, and more importantly, it’s what actually builds an audience of people who trust you.
Quick Recap
- The magic setting doesn’t exist. Most of those settings are already on by default.
- Follow, unfollow, self-share loops grow your numbers with people who don’t care about you.
- Keyword stuffing reads as spam to Instagram now, not SEO.
- Engagement pods create fake engagement that collapses the second the pod does.
- Instead, write for one specific person, ask your audience directly what they want, tease upcoming content, and let AI help you naturally weave in keywords.
Your Action Challenge
Write your next three posts exactly for that one person we talked about. What is she struggling with today that you can help her with, or at least reframe her mindset around?
