If your engagement dropped this summer and you’re wondering what you did wrong… you didn’t do anything wrong.

The Instagram summer dip happens every single year. Between May and September, people are out living their lives. Kids are home, vacations are happening, schedules fall apart in the best possible way. Engagement pulls back because life got full. That’s completely normal.

But 2026 has something extra going on.

Engagement was already down platform-wide before summer even started. So if it feels bigger this year than usual, it’s because it is. You’re dealing with two things at once: the regular summer lull and a platform shift that’s been building for a while. This episode is about navigating both at the same time.

What the Algorithm Actually Wants Right Now

This is the piece most people are still getting wrong, and it matters more than ever in a slower season.

Watch Time Is the Number One Signal

The metric that matters most on Instagram in 2026 is watch time. If someone watches your reel all the way through, watches it twice, or swipes through your entire carousel, the algorithm treats that as a strong signal that your content is worth pushing to more people.

Before you post something, ask yourself: would someone watch this until the end? What’s their reason to stick around?

Sends and Shares Come Right After

The second most important signal right now is the send and share rate. That little paper airplane button. When someone sends your post to a friend in the DMs or shares it to their stories, Instagram reads that as a green light to push it further.

Likes still matter, but they’re not the main thing anymore. If your content makes someone want to share it with a friend, you’re in a really strong spot.

How Much Should You Actually Be Posting This Summer?

There are two camps on this and both have real validity.

If you have the capacity to post five, six, seven or more times a week, keep going. Volume helps you learn faster. You get more data, more chances for something to take off, and more reps to figure out what’s working.

But if summer got full and you can realistically only show up two or three times a week… that’s okay too.

Research now shows that accounts posting less but more intentionally are still seeing strong engagement. The algorithm doesn’t punish you for posting less as long as you’re showing up consistently. Two to three quality posts a week is enough to stay in the game.

This is your summer permission slip. Post as much as you can without losing quality or losing your mind.

One more thing worth knowing: a lot of accounts go quiet in the summer. If you’re still showing up, your posts may actually reach more people because there’s less competition in the feed.

Stories Are Your Secret Weapon This Summer

When your feed reach dips in the summer, your stories audience often stays consistent. The people who are genuinely connected to you are still checking your stories even when they’re not scrolling the feed as much.

Stories are where the casual summer content can live. Behind the scenes moments, polls, quick questions, real life stuff. This is what keeps the relationship warm between you and your audience without the pressure of watching all your performance metrics.

And honestly? People are nosy. They want to know what you’re doing, where you’re going, what’s happening in your day-to-day life. The “boring” stuff gets way more traction than you’d expect. Stories let you stay visible and connected without having to perform.

Practical Fixes for Your Summertime Content

Batch before any vacations or time off. Record two or three reels or posts before you leave and schedule them. You don’t need to be thinking about Instagram while you’re actually on vacation.

Focus on watch time when you create. Ask yourself why someone would watch your content all the way through. What are they getting from making it to the end?

Repurpose your top three posts from earlier this year. New followers haven’t seen that content yet and the algorithm will still push it. Look at your top posts from January through May and give them a fresh spin for summer. Less work, still effective.

Let stories carry the connection piece. Your feed stays your feed. Your stories carry your personality and keep the relationship warm. You don’t have to blend them.

If you take a week off, schedule one reel and do a few stories. That’s enough to stay visible. You don’t need to do more than that.

Rest Is Part of Your Strategy

Showing up less in the summer is not quitting.

The people who burn out are the ones trying to keep the exact same pace all the way through. By the end of August they’re exhausted, posting out of obligation, and their content reflects that.

Taking a real break often means coming back with more to say. A clearer strategy. Actual excitement about what you’re going to post next. That energy shows in the work.

Pick a schedule you can actually stick to and do that. Bare minimum first. If you can do more, great. If you can’t, two to three intentional posts a week is completely enough.
