I want you to think about the last time you posted something on Instagram and just felt off about it.
You spent time on it. It looked good. It said something useful. But when you looked back at it after posting, something felt muddy. Bogged down. And you could not quite put your finger on why.
That feeling almost always comes from the same place. Your content is not clear enough. And unclear content is the number one silent killer of Instagram growth that nobody is talking about.
Today I want to show you exactly what it looks like so you can spot it and fix it fast.
Why Clarity Is So Hard to See From the Inside
Clarity is one of those things that is really difficult to catch in your own content because you are so close to it. You know what you do. You know who you help. You know what you mean when you write something.
But your audience does not have that context. They are seeing your content cold, for the first time, with zero background. And if they cannot figure out within about two seconds who you are, who you help, and why it matters to them, they are gone.
This is not about being a bad writer or a bad creator. It is just a few blind spots that are completely fixable once you know what to look for. One of the best tricks is getting an outside perspective. Ask your partner, your best friend, or someone who is not in your industry to look at your profile and tell you honestly whether they can understand what you do. What feels obvious to you is often not obvious at all to someone seeing it for the first time.
Here are the three signs to look for.
Sign 1: Your Bio and Your Content Are Sending Completely Different Messages
This is the one I see most often when I do Instagram audits and VIP days. And it is so easy to miss from the inside.
Someone’s bio says they help busy moms with meal planning. But then you scroll their feed and there are workout tips, a couple of motivational quotes, some business mindset content, and maybe one recipe in twelve posts. The person who found that account from a meal planning reel is now confused. Is this a health account? A business account? A lifestyle account?
When your bio and your content are not telling the same story, you are creating friction for every new person who finds you. They cannot figure out if they are in the right place so they leave.
Your bio is the promise. Your content has to deliver on that promise consistently. If someone landed on your profile from your most recent post, would your bio make sense to them? If not, there is a mismatch worth fixing.
Sign 2: Your Content Is All Information and No Personality or Perspective
This is the most common clarity problem I see with service providers specifically. The content is technically good. The tips are accurate. But it reads like it could have been written by anyone. Or honestly, by ChatGPT.
There is no opinion in it. No voice. No “in my experience” or “here is what I actually see with my clients” or “this is the one thing I wish someone had told me sooner.”
Information without perspective does not build trust because it does not give people a reason to choose YOU over the thousand other people posting about the same topic.
Here is a quick test: if someone covered your name on your post, would they still know it was you? If the answer is no, that is the sign. Clarity is not just about being understood. It is about being recognizable.
Sign 3: You Are Not Clear on WHO You Are Talking To So Everything Feels Generic
When you are not totally sure who your content is for, you subconsciously write for everyone. And content written for everyone resonates deeply with almost no one.
This shows up as posts that could apply to any business owner, any mom, any person trying to grow on Instagram. There is no specific person in mind when the words are being written, and people can feel that even if they cannot name it.
The fix is getting clear on one specific person so that when you sit down to write, you are basically sending a message directly to them. What is her specific frustration right now? What did she Google this morning? What would make her stop mid-scroll and think wait, this is exactly what I am going through?
One note here: I am not a huge fan of the super detailed avatar exercise where you name her and decide whether she drinks iced coffee or hot coffee and lives in the mountains. That level of detail can actually make your content too narrow. What I want you to get specific about is the PROBLEM. Get deep on what she is struggling with and how you help her solve it. That specificity in the problem makes your content feel personal to a much wider group of people who share that same struggle.
The more specific the problem you are solving, the clearer your content becomes automatically.
The Three Fixes
Fix 1: Do a Bio and Content Audit Today
Pull up your bio and read it out loud. Then scroll your last nine posts. Ask yourself one question: do they match?
Is your content delivering on whatever your bio is promising? If someone found you from your most recent post, would your bio make sense to them?
If there is a mismatch anywhere, start there. Either rewrite your bio or reframe your content so they are telling the same story. You do not need to overhaul everything at once. Just pick one and start closing the gap.
Fix 2: Add One Opinion or Personal Experience to Every Post
Before you hit post on anything, stop and ask yourself: where is my perspective in this?
It does not need to be a long story. It can be one line. “In my experience…” or “I have seen this with almost every client I work with…” or “This is the thing I wish someone had told me sooner.” That one line is what makes the content feel human and gives people a real reason to trust you specifically over everyone else saying similar things.
Fix 3: Write Your Next Three Posts to One Specific Person
Not your general audience. One person. Think of it like your best friend is your ideal client and she just came to you with a question about something you teach. What would you tell her? Write that post.
Notice how much more specific and natural your words get when you have one real person in mind instead of a crowd. That specificity is what makes people feel seen. And feeling seen is what makes them follow, save, and eventually buy.
What Clarity Actually Gives You
Here is what I really want you to hear. Being clearer does not mean being more boring or more rigid or more polished. It actually means the opposite.
When you know exactly who you are talking to and you are not trying to appeal to everyone at once, you get to relax into your actual voice. You get to have opinions. You get to tell real stories from your own experience and your clients’ experiences. Clarity is what gives you permission to just be yourself on Instagram instead of performing some version of what you think everyone wants to see.
The accounts that actually make money on Instagram are not always the ones with the most followers or the most viral reels. They are the ones where every person who lands on the page immediately thinks yes, this is for me. That feeling comes from clarity. And it is completely within your control.
Your Action Challenge
Go to your Instagram profile right now and read your bio. Then look at your last three posts. Do they match? Does your content deliver on what your bio is promising?
If there is a disconnect anywhere, that is your one thing to fix this week. Just that. Pick either the bio or the content, start there, and make them match.
Once you have done that, come back and listen to this episode again to make sure everything is flowing the way it should.
