Your Clients Are Searching for You on Instagram. Are You Showing Up?

Wanna work together? Cool, me too.

When I’m not on the ‘gram, I’m popping into your inbox to help you be more successful on IG

Should we make this official? I’ll send you my Instagram Growth Roadmap immediately just for hopping on.

Here is something that is going to completely change the way you look at every single post you put on Instagram.

Instagram is not just a social media app anymore. It is also a search engine. And most small business owners are completely invisible on it — not because their content is bad, but because nobody ever taught them how to make their profile and content searchable.

Once you understand this, you will never look at your captions, your bio, or your reels the same way again.

Why This Is Happening Now

The way people use Instagram has shifted massively. It is not that the platform itself changed everything overnight — it is that user behavior changed. People are now opening Instagram and going straight to the search bar and typing things like “wedding photographer Nashville,” “health coach for busy moms,” “how to organize a small kitchen,” or “Instagram tips for small business.”

The same way they would Google something.

And here is the part that makes this even bigger: Instagram posts can now show up directly on Google. So if someone is searching “health plan for busy moms” on Google and you talk about that topic using those exact words in your content… your reel or post could show up in those results. Without you ever writing a single blog post.

That is a massive opportunity that most small business owners are completely sleeping on.

Where Keywords Actually Need to Live

If you want to be found on Instagram search and now on Google keywords need to show up in several specific places on your profile and in your content.

Your name field. This is the most searchable piece of real estate on your entire Instagram profile. If you can work a couple of strong keywords into your name field… the bold line that shows up right under your profile photo… do it. Think about what your ideal client would actually type to find someone like you.

Your bio. The second most important place. Your bio should clearly state what you do, who you help, and where you are based if you serve a local area. Think of it like answering a search query, not writing a cute tagline.

Your captions. Especially the first two or three lines before the caption gets cut off. Think of Instagram captions like a blog post so if you were writing for Google, you would make sure the right keywords showed up naturally throughout. Same idea here. Just write the way your audience actually speaks and searches. No keyword stuffing.

Your on-screen text in reels. Instagram actually reads the text that appears on your videos. So if your reel is about meal planning for busy moms and those words appear on screen — Instagram knows what your content is about and who to show it to.

Your spoken words. Even if you do not add captions to your reels, Instagram transcribes your audio automatically. What you say out loud matters for searchability just as much as what you type.

This Is Especially Important for Local Businesses

If you are a photographer, hairstylist, therapist, personal trainer, interior designer, or anyone who serves clients in a specific area — this is one of the most powerful things you can do right now and almost nobody is doing it.

Adding your city, neighborhood, or region into your bio, your captions, your on-screen text, and your location tags makes it possible for people searching “newborn photographer Chicago” or “interior designer Austin Texas” to actually find you.

If those words are nowhere on your page, Instagram has no way to connect you to those searches. It is that simple.

The goal is to make it impossible for Instagram not to know where you are and who you serve.

The Real Deal on Hashtags in 2026

Okay let’s talk about hashtags because this is where a lot of people are confused.

Hashtags are not dead. They still function as keywords and they can still help people find your content through search. But they are not the massive reach driver they used to be, and you absolutely do not need to stress about them the way everyone used to.

The honest truth? Most posts and reels actually perform better without a wall of hashtags than they do with one.

Here is the recommendation: if you use hashtags, stick to two or three that are specific and genuinely relevant to your content. Skip the giant generic ones like #smallbusiness — that hashtag has tens of millions of posts and you are never going to be found there. Think niche and local instead. Something like #austinphotographer is going to do far more for you than #photographer ever will.

And if you decide to skip hashtags entirely on a post? That is completely fine. The keyword work happening in your bio and captions is going to do more for your discoverability than any hashtag wall ever did.

Local businesses are the exception — if you are specifically posting to attract local clients or show off your work in your area, two or three location-specific hashtags are worth adding.

Four Fixes You Can Make Today

Fix 1: Audit Your Bio

Go look at your Instagram bio right now. Does it clearly say what you do, who you help, and where you are based if you are local? If a stranger searched for your main service on Instagram, would your profile make sense to them immediately?

If not, rewrite it like you are answering a search query. Instead of “mama, dog lover, helping women feel confident ✨” try something like “Instagram strategist helping service providers grow and make sales without burning out — Nashville.” Clear, specific, searchable.

A great trick: get on someone else’s phone — someone who does not already follow you — and search for what you do. See if your profile comes up. If it does not, that tells you exactly where to start.

Fix 2: Start Writing Captions Around Search Intent

Before you write your next caption, ask yourself: what would my ideal client actually type into Instagram to find this? Then use that language naturally throughout your caption — especially in the first two or three lines.

You do not need to force keywords in awkwardly or pile them at the end. Just write the way your audience actually speaks and searches and let the keywords show up naturally.

Fix 3: Add Your Location Everywhere (Local Businesses)

Every post, every reel, every story — if you serve a local area, your location should be showing up somewhere. Tag your city, your neighborhood, the areas your clients come from. Use location stickers on stories. Add your city to your captions naturally.

Make it impossible for Instagram to not know where you are and who you serve in your community.

Fix 4: Treat Hashtags as Optional Keywords

If you use them, pick two or three that are niche and specific — not massive generic ones. Think about what someone might actually search, not just what describes your content broadly. Local hashtags especially are worth using if you are trying to attract clients in your area.

And if you skip them entirely? You are going to be just fine.

The Bigger Mindset Shift

Here is what I want you to really take away from this. This is not one more thing to stress about. This is actually one of the best free opportunities available to you right now.

Content that is optimized for search keeps working long after you post it. A reel you posted six months ago with the right keywords in the caption and on-screen text could still be bringing new people to your page today. That is the difference between content that lives for 24 hours and content that actually builds your business over time.

You do not need a blog. You do not need a website overhaul. You just need to start thinking about Instagram with a search engine mindset — and making small, intentional tweaks to what you are already creating.

Think of Instagram as primarily a social app — but with a search engine running quietly in the background. And right now, most of your competitors have no idea that search engine exists.

Your Action Challenge

Go to your Instagram bio right now and ask yourself honestly: if a stranger searched for what I do, would my profile show up? Would it make sense to them immediately?

If the answer is no, rewrite it this week. Add what you do, who you help, and where you are based if you serve a local area. That one change alone can start bringing new eyes to your page without you posting a single new piece of content.
