You post something. It does pretty well, a few saves, some comments, people are actually watching. And you think: okay, this is the one. Someone is going to DM me about this.
And then nothing. Crickets. No bookings, no questions, no DMs at all.
The wild thing is your content was actually good. So what is going on?
There are three really specific reasons people are not sliding into your DMs …and none of them are about your content quality. Better yet, all three are completely fixable starting today.
The Gap Nobody Talks About
Getting DMs is not something that just happens automatically when you post good content. There is actually a real gap between someone consuming your content and someone reaching out to you , and most people have no idea that gap exists, let alone how to close it.
If you are getting views and saves but zero DMs, you are not doing anything wrong. You have the first piece of the puzzle. You are just missing a few key pieces that turn a passive viewer into someone who actually reaches out.
Here is what those missing pieces are.
Reason 1: You Are Never Actually Asking for the DM
Most people end their content with “let me know what you think in the comments,” “save this for later,” or just… nothing. No direction at all.
Here is the reality: people on Instagram are passive by default, especially right now. Most people are not even liking posts anymore, let alone commenting. They are scrolling, watching, consuming — and then moving on. They are not being lazy. They just need a clear invitation and a specific next step.
If you are not explicitly saying “DM me the word [keyword] and I will send you this thing” or “send me a DM and tell me [specific question]” — most people are simply not going to do it on their own.
The ask has to be there. Every single time.
Reason 2: Your Content Is Not Making People Feel Connected Enough to Reach Out
This is the big one.
There is a real difference between content people find useful and content that makes people feel like they actually know you. DMs come from connection, not just value. If your content is mostly tips and information without much of your personality, your stories, or your real moments woven in — people will consume it and appreciate it, but they will never feel close enough to slide into your DMs.
Think about the last time YOU DMed a creator. It was probably because something they said made you feel like they were talking directly to you. Like they got it. Like they had been there.
That is the feeling your content needs to create.
Reason 3: You Are Not Giving People a Specific Enough Reason to DM You
Even when you do ask for the DM, if the reason is vague people are not going to follow through.
“DM me if you have questions” is too open-ended. People will think I do not even know what questions I have and keep scrolling.
But “DM me the word CONTENT and I will send you my free content calendar to help you get out of posting paralysis” gives them a reason to act right now. It is specific. It is low friction. It feels easy and worth doing.
The more specific and concrete the reason, the more DMs you will get.
The Fixes
Fix 1: Add a DM Call to Action to Your Next Three Posts
Not a comment CTA. Not a save CTA. A DM specifically.
DMs in the Messenger part of Instagram are actually a really important engagement signal — they tell Instagram that people value your content enough to have a real conversation with you. That matters for your reach.
Try something like: “DM me the word [keyword] and I will send you [specific thing]” or “Send me a DM and ask me your biggest question about [topic] — I read and respond to every single one.”
Test this on your next three posts and see what shifts.
Fix 2: Audit Your Content and Stories for Personality
Go into your archive and look at your last ten posts and recent stories. Ask yourself honestly: if I were my ideal client looking at this account, would I feel connected to this person? Would I feel called to reach out?
How many of your recent posts include a personal story, a real moment, or something that sounds so unmistakably like you that AI could not have written it?
If most of what you are sharing is tips and information with no personal layer, that is your gap. Start by adding just one personal line or story element to your next few posts. It is a small shift that makes a big difference.
Fix 3: Give Them a Reason That Feels Easy and Specific
Pick one piece of free value you can offer in the DMs — a resource, a template, an extra tip, a recommendation — and build your CTA around that one specific thing.
Lower the bar as much as possible. Do not make them give you their email address. Just give it to them. The easier and more frictionless the ask, the more people will actually do it. And then you have an open conversation in the DMs where you can follow up, ask how it helped, and start building real trust.
That is how passive viewers become people who actually book with you.
What I Really Want You to Hear
People not DMing you does not mean they do not like you. It does not mean your content is not good.
It means the bridge between their brain and your DMs has not been built yet — and you are the one who gets to build it.
Every creator you have ever thought “wow she must get so many DMs” is specifically asking for them. Consistently. With a real and specific reason attached every single time. You can do that too starting with your very next post.
Your Action Challenge
Add a DM call to action to your very next post. Pick a keyword, attach something specific to it, and tell people exactly what to do.
Then come find Nicole on Instagram at @nicoleialeggio and tell her you did it. She wants to know how it goes — and yes, she will respond.
