Wanna work together? Cool, me too.

Should we make this official? I’ll send you my Instagram Growth Roadmap immediately just for hopping on.

You know those posts that make you stop mid-scroll because they feel way too real? The ones that make you think, “How did this person get inside my head?” That’s the power of relatable content, and today, we’re diving deep into how to create it.

But here’s the key: relatable content isn’t about what you relate to—it’s about what your audience relates to. If you want to build deeper connections, increase engagement, and make your content feel tailor-made for your people, this is for you.

Why Relatable Content Works

Relatable content makes people feel:

  • Understood (“This is exactly how I feel.”)
  • Seen (“OMG, this is so me.”)
  • Connected (“They just get me.”)

If you’ve ever had someone comment, “How did you see inside my head?”—you nailed it.

And here’s why it matters: Instagram is shifting. People are overwhelmed with sales-driven content. The brands and creators who focus on connection first are seeing more growth because shares have become a major factor in Instagram’s algorithm. The more relatable your content, the more it gets shared—and the further it reaches.

Common Mistakes in Creating Relatable Content

The biggest mistake? Making content about your own struggles instead of your audience’s.

For example:

  • As a social media manager, if I post about late-paying clients, that’s my struggle—not my audience’s. My ideal clients (who might hire me) won’t relate, and they might even feel uncomfortable.
  • Instead, I should focus on what they struggle with. For example: “You spent five hours creating a Reel… only to get two likes (one from your mom).” That’s something they can connect with!

How to Find What Your Audience Relates To

If you’re wondering, “How do I know what my audience will find relatable?”, here are three ways to figure it out:

1. Listen to Your Audience in the Wild

  • DMs & Comments: What do people ask you about repeatedly?
  • Facebook Groups & Reddit: See what questions are being asked in your niche.
  • Bigger Accounts in Your Industry: What topics spark the most engagement?
  • Client Emails & Conversations: If a client asks about something, chances are many others are wondering the same thing.

2. Use Their Exact Words

When people describe their struggles, take notes on the exact language they use. This makes your content feel hyper-personalized.

For example:

  • Instead of “Struggling with engagement?” try “Why does nobody ever comment on my posts?”
  • Instead of “Get fit and healthy,” try “I just want to feel confident in my jeans again.”

3. Look at Past High-Performing Content

  • Which of your posts got the most comments saying, “This is so me!”?
  • What about your competitors’ viral posts? What made people feel seen?

Turning Relatable Thoughts into Content Ideas

Here’s a simple exercise to generate ideas:

1️⃣ Write down your audience’s biggest frustrations (in their words). 2️⃣ List out the thoughts they have daily related to these frustrations. 3️⃣ Turn those thoughts into content.

Examples:

📌 For a social media coach:

  • Frustration: “I don’t know what to post.”
  • Daily Thought: “Ugh, I should post today, but I have no idea what to say.”
  • Content Idea: A Reel of you staring at your phone with the caption “Me trying to think of a caption for the 100th time today.”

📌 For a skincare brand:

  • Frustration: “My skin breaks out every time I try a new product.”
  • Daily Thought: “Why is my skin so sensitive?”
  • Content Idea: A Reel of someone nervously applying a new skincare product with text that says “Trying a new product today… praying my skin doesn’t freak out!”
