If you’ve ever posted something and thought, “Oh cool. Three likes. Guess I’ll never post again,” welcome. You’re not alone.
This episode came straight from what I’m hearing on our live Q&A calls inside the Plug & Post Hub and on my one-on-one coaching calls: people are frustrated. They’re putting in effort, showing up, trying to be consistent… and engagement looks like it fell off a cliff.
Here’s the truth: it’s not that your content suddenly sucks. Instagram is just different now.
Let’s break down what’s actually happening (and what to do about it).
Engagement Isn’t Dead. It’s Just Private Now.
Instagram in 2026 is not Instagram in 2020.
Back then:
- We were stuck inside
- People craved community
- Comment sections were basically group chats
Now?
People are busy. Attention spans are short. And most importantly…
People are hoarding engagement.
They’re less likely to:
- comment
- publicly like
And more likely to:
- save quietly
- send it to a friend privately
- DM you instead of commenting
So before you panic and decide to quit, I need you to hear this:
Low public engagement doesn’t automatically mean people aren’t watching.
They are. They’re just being sneaky about it.
Why People Don’t Want to Like or Comment Anymore
One major reason: Instagram shows people what you engage with.
You know when you’re scrolling and see “Liked by ___” and it lists a friend’s handle?
Yeah. That.
So if your content touches anything personal (like):
- politics
- parenting
- money
- relationships
- body image
people might agree with you… but they don’t want their friends seeing that they interacted.
So they choose the quieter option:
- save
- share privately
- DM you
Which means you can’t diagnose your content based on likes alone anymore.
Step One: Check the Right Metrics Before You Change Anything
Before you try to “fix” engagement, look at the full picture:
- Are saves high?
- Are shares happening?
- Are DMs coming in?
- Is watch time strong?
If you’re seeing saves, shares, DMs, or strong watch time… don’t overhaul everything.
You’re doing better than you think.
Also: if your saves are higher than your likes?
Congrats. Your content is valuable.
That’s a win.
Quick Note: Don’t Compare Your Likes to Someone Else’s (It’s a Trap)
This came up in a Plug & Post Q&A call:
A member with a solid following said, “I don’t get it. People with my same following get way more likes.”
So we looked at those accounts.
And what we noticed was… they’re often posting 1–2x a week. And if something underperforms?
They delete or archive it.
So it looks like every post “performs amazing” when really… you’re just not seeing the ones that didn’t.
My take:
Don’t delete posts just because they didn’t pop off in 48 hours.
I’ve had posts take off weeks later because someone shared them, or they hit Explore, or the algorithm decided to behave for once.
Leave your posts up. Let them work.
It’s Not Your Ideas. It’s Your Delivery.
This is the biggest shift.
A lot of people assume:
“My content must not be good.”
But most of the time the idea is solid.
The issue is the delivery is too passive.
Passive content sounds like:
- “Here are 3 tips…”
- “You should try this…”
- “This is helpful…”
It’s informative… but it doesn’t invite conversation.
Interactive content sounds like:
- “Which one are you struggling with?”
- “Be honest—have you done this?”
- “Comment the number and I’ll tell you what to fix first.”
- “Want a part two?”
Engagement doesn’t magically happen.
You have to ask for it.
Think of it like engineering engagement instead of hoping it shows up.
The Shift: From Broadcasting to Inviting
Passive post example:
“Here are five reasons your reels aren’t growing.”
Okay… and then what?
Interactive version:
- “Which one of these is happening to you right now—1, 2, 3, 4, or 5?”
- “Comment the number and I’ll tell you what to fix first.”
Same topic. Totally different outcome.
3 Caption Prompts That Actually Get People to Respond
If you want comments or DMs, use prompts that feel easy to answer.
1) The Self-Identification Prompt
“Be honest—are you more ___ or ___?”
Example: “Are you more of a perfectionist or a procrastinator?”
People LOVE labeling themselves. It’s basically their favorite hobby.
2) The Micro-Commitment Prompt
“On a scale of 1–10, how consistent have you been lately?”
Low effort, quick answer, easy engagement.
3) The Permission + Reward Prompt
“Want the checklist? Comment ‘AUDIT’ and I’ll DM it to you.”
Clear action + reward attached = people actually do it.
Content That Gets Likes vs. Content That Gets Replies
Likes usually come from:
- motivational quotes
- memes
- trending audio
- general relatable stuff
Replies come from:
- specific problems
- accountability
- direct questions
- very clear “tell me” prompts
If you want engagement, you have to direct the behavior.
Stories Are Where Engagement Gets Easy (and Where Sales Happen)
Stories are the easiest place to build interaction right now because:
- it’s private
- there’s no public comment section pressure
- no friend visibility
Here are 3 Story strategies that work immediately:
1) “I need your opinion on something…”
Then add a poll, question box, or slider.
People love helping, especially when it’s a one-tap answer.
2) “Tell me I’m not the only one who…”
This is basically an invitation for everyone to reply “OMG SAME.”
3) The Direct DM Prompt
Use a bold hook + one clear instruction.
Example:
“Your stories should be selling for you every week… Reply ‘100’ and I’ll send you the prompts.”
This works because DMs signal Instagram to show your story to more people.
A Simple 3-Day Engagement Reset
If engagement feels low, try this:
- Day 1: Post a self-identifying post
(“If you’re ___ and want ___, you’re in the right place.”) - Day 2: Post a high-value carousel + ask an interactive CTA
(“Which one stood out most?” / “Want part 2?”) - Days 3–5: Go heavy on Stories using interaction stickers daily
Polls, sliders, question boxes.
Bonus:
- Reply quickly to comments during this reset week
- Comment intentionally on 10 accounts in your niche
This combo almost always creates an engagement spike.
If the part that stresses you out is:
- “What do I even say?”
- “How do I ask without sounding desperate?”
- “How do I write captions that invite engagement?”
That’s exactly what Plug & Post is designed to solve.
Inside, you get:
- built-in engagement prompts
- CTAs written for growth, connection, or conversion
- weekly content ideas + captions + story prompts
- a system that keeps you consistent (even when motivation is in the trash)
Plus: we’re doing live Q&A calls now, which makes it ridiculously easy to get unstuck fast.
Recap
- Engagement isn’t dead—it’s private
- Saves and shares matter more than likes/comments now
- Your ideas are probably fine—your delivery needs a tweak
- Passive content informs
- Interactive content invites
- Stories are where your warmest people hang out (and where money happens)
Action Challenge
For the next 7 days:
- Add one direct question to every caption
- Use one engagement sticker in Stories daily
- Ask for one specific action (comment, DM, save, reply)
Then DM me on Instagram and tell me what changed.
