If your Instagram reach feels especially bad right now, welcome. You’re not broken. Your account isn’t doomed. And you’re definitely not alone.
I’m recording this episode while Virginia is preparing for a snow apocalypse and both of my kids have the flu—so if that doesn’t scream “real life energy,” I don’t know what does. And honestly? That’s kind of the point of this episode.
Because Instagram growth isn’t linear. It never has been. And these slow, frustrating seasons are part of the game—even for people with massive audiences.
Let’s talk about it.
Slow Growth Isn’t Failure (Even Though It Feels Like It)
Here’s what usually happens:
You post → reach is low → self-doubt creeps in → motivation drops → you start wondering if Instagram is even worth it anymore.
Sound familiar?
The truth is, slow growth does not mean stagnant growth. These seasons are often where:
- Your messaging sharpens
- Your confidence gets tested
- Your consistency actually matters
Growth is still happening behind the scenes. People are seeing your content. They’re warming up. They’re deciding whether to trust you. They just haven’t taken action yet.
Instagram plateaus come in waves. I see it constantly across different accounts, niches, and audience sizes. And no—Instagram is not punishing you unless you violated guidelines.
If anything, these moments feel like a quiet test:
Are you going to keep going, or are you going to quit like most people do?
Even Big Accounts Feel This (Yes, Really)
This part matters, so I want you to hear it clearly:
Growth insecurity does not disappear at 10k followers.
It doesn’t disappear at 50k.
Or 100k.
Or even 200k.
It just changes shape.
I’ve worked with creators who have hundreds of thousands of followers, and they still panic when reach dips. They still wonder if something “stopped working.” They still feel discouraged during plateaus.
I had a client last year who almost quit during a slow season. She was convinced Instagram wasn’t working anymore. We stayed consistent anyway.
Since then? Multiple reels over a million views. One hit over 14 million.
The only difference was that she didn’t quit during the boring middle.
Let’s Redefine What “Winning” Actually Looks Like
Vanity metrics will mess with your head if you let them.
Views fluctuate wildly. You don’t control them. Instagram does.
Right now, my reach is about half of what’s normal for my account—but my sales are up. That tells me the right people are seeing my content, and honestly? That’s what matters.
Here are the wins that actually count:
- Shares (even one is huge)
- Saves
- DMs that say “this helped me”
- Comments from people who needed to hear it
- One aligned follower instead of thousands of random views
I also love tracking followers per post, not just reach. One person who truly connects with your content is worth far more than a viral reel that brings no alignment.
Ask yourself this:
If this post helped one person today, was it worth posting?
The answer is always yes.
What to Do When It Feels Like No One Is Watching
1. Shrink the Goal
Stop posting to “grow” and start posting to help the people already there. When you shift from performance to service, engagement usually follows.
2. Pick One Metric
Choose one win for the week: saves, DMs, or comments. Ignore everything else. One focus = less mental chaos.
3. Borrow Belief
If you don’t fully believe in yourself right now, that’s okay. I’ll hold the belief for you. You are capable of growing on Instagram. Keep going until you believe it too.
Post for:
- Your past self
- Your future audience
- The person who hasn’t found you yet
4. Stay Visible (Even on Low Energy Days)
Low-effort content counts.
Stories count.
B-roll counts.
Messy posts count.
You don’t need perfection to stay relevant—you need consistency.
Silence hurts more than low reach. And disappearing for a month or more makes rebuilding trust way harder than just showing up imperfectly.
The Creators Who Win Are the Ones Who Don’t Quit
Most people quit during plateaus. That’s why consistency during these seasons is such a massive advantage.
You don’t need confidence right now.
You don’t need motivation.
You just need to keep going.
Success almost always comes after the boring middle.
