How to Sell on Instagram Without Being Salesy: Soft CTAs & “Sneaky Promo” That Actually Work

Wanna work together? Cool, me too.

When I’m not on the ‘gram, I’m popping into your inbox to help you be more successful on IG

Should we make this official? I’ll send you my Instagram Growth Roadmap immediately just for hopping on.

If you’ve ever written a call to action, stared at it, hated it, deleted it, rewrote it, and still thought:

“This feels so icky…”

You are so not alone.

Most business owners don’t hate selling.
They hate feeling like they have to turn into a shouty, “BUY NOW!!!” version of themselves just to make money.

Good news:
You absolutely do not have to market like that on Instagram for your content to convert.

In this post, we’re going to walk through:

  • Why sales content doesn’t have to scream “buy now”
  • 3 ways to seed your offers inside your regular educational content (aka sneaky promo)
  • Soft-sell CTAs that feel natural but still move people to DM or click
  • Post types that naturally lead to conversions

Let’s make your marketing feel like you.

1. Why Sales Content Doesn’t Have to Scream “BUY NOW”

When we think “sales content,” a lot of us picture:

  • Pressure
  • Pushiness
  • Manipulation
  • Car salesman energy

That’s not just uncomfortable for you—it’s also something your audience is actively turned off by on Instagram.

The good news?
That’s not what sells on the app anyway.

What actually sells on Instagram:

  • Clarity – what you do and who it helps
  • Relevance – does this solve a problem I have right now?
  • Proof – can you actually help people the way you say you can?
  • Logical next step – your offer makes sense as “step D” after they’ve already tried A, B, and C

Sales content only starts to feel gross when:

  • It’s totally disconnected from what you’ve been talking about
  • It pops up out of nowhere with zero context
  • It’s just: “Here’s my offer, buy it now” with no bridge

And just to be clear:
There is a time and place for louder, “HEY WE’RE ON SALE” content—like during an actual launch, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, or a flash sale.

Those posts are more like a courtesy announcement:

“Hey, if you’ve been thinking about this, now’s the time.”

But for your everyday content?
We don’t want every post to feel like a flashing red “BUY NOW” button.

2. What It Looks Like When Your Sales Content Is Working

You’ll know your messaging is starting to click when things like this start happening:

  • People DM you asking:
    • “How can I work with you?”
    • “Would this work for me too?”
    • “Can you tell me more about XYZ offer?”
  • You get messages like, “I’ve been thinking about this and it’s like you’re in my head.”
  • People reference specific stories you’ve told in previous posts
  • Followers can guess what your upcoming offer is before you officially announce it

All of those are signs that your offer is:

  • Clear
  • Desired
  • Connected to the content you’re already creating

That’s the foundation of selling without being salesy.

3. Sneaky Promo: 3 Ways to Seed Your Offer Inside Educational Content

Let’s talk about my favorite thing: sneaky promo.
This is where you’re educating and selling at the same time—but it never feels like a hard pitch.

Somebody reading the post might not even realize it’s “sales content” at all… but it plants a seed.

Here are three ways to do it:

3.1 Use Client Examples in Your Regular Tips

Any time you teach something, you can tie it back to a real client, student, or buyer.

Example you might use:

“Yesterday inside Plug & Post, a member was stuck on her hooks, so she DM’d me.
Here’s the exact tweak we made to turn her ‘meh’ hook into something scroll-stopping.”

Why this works:

  • You’re still teaching (value first)
  • You’re quietly showcasing your offer
  • You’re normalizing hiring you / joining your program
  • You’re showing real, specific wins

Niche examples:

  • Fitness coach: “One of my 1:1 clients was stuck in a plateau, so here’s how we adjusted her workouts to get things moving again.”
  • Photographer: “A bride asked me this on her consult call yesterday—I figured you might want to know the answer too.”
  • Therapist / Life coach: “A client had this epiphany in our session yesterday, and I have to share it with you.”

You’re not bragging.
You’re showing you do this for real people in real life.

3.2 Mention Your Method, Framework, or Process

You don’t always need to say the name of the offer or drop the price.
You can simply talk about how you help.

Examples:

  • “Inside my 3-step content formula, this is exactly how we take someone from zero clients to fully booked—without posting 5x a day.”
  • “This is the first thing I walk new clients through before we ever touch their graphics.”

This:

  • Creates curiosity
  • Positions you as someone with a clear process
  • Makes people wonder, “Wait, what is this framework and how do I get inside it?”

3.3 Show the Gap… Then Show That You Fill It

Most people already know something isn’t working.
Your job is to:

  1. Name the thing that’s missing
  2. Explain why it matters
  3. Show that your offer helps fix it

Examples:

  • Interior designer: “Most people buy furniture before they think about layout—and that’s why their rooms never feel quite right.
Here’s how I do it differently for my clients…”
  • Business coach: “Most new founders try to sell the wrong offer first. Here’s what I help them focus on instead so they don’t burn out or go broke.”

You’re not shaming.
You’re helping them see:

“Ohhh… that’s why what I’m doing isn’t working—and here’s a better option.”

4. Soft-Sell CTAs That Don’t Feel Awkward

Now let’s talk about how you end your posts without sounding needy or desperate.

These CTAs are low-pressure, but still clear.

CTA Style 1: “Offer to Help”

Supportive, friendly, not pushy.

Examples:

  • “If you want help with this too, DM me the word PLAN and I’ll walk you through your next step.”
  • “If you want me to personally audit your page, DM me the word AUDIT.”
  • “If this hit home, DM me and I’ll send you something that will help.”

You’re inviting, not forcing.

CTA Style 2: Curiosity-Based

These work so well for getting DMs.

Examples:

  • “I just taught this inside Plug & Post—want the breakdown?”
  • “I helped a client do this today. Want to see the exact script I gave her? DM me the word SCRIPT and I’ll send it over.”

You’re leveraging FOMO in a soft, fun way.

CTA Style 3: Story-Based

Perfect to pair with client journeys or personal stories.

Example:

“Last week, a client told me this finally clicked.
If you’re waiting for your ‘click’ moment too, DM me the word READY and I’ll point you in the right direction.”

It ties your story directly to their next step.

CTA Style 4: Gentle Invitation

Safe. Simple. Respectful.

  • “No pressure at all, but if you want more info about this, comment INFO below and I’ll DM you the details.”
  • “If you’re curious what this could look like for you, DM me and we can chat about it.”

You’re letting them opt into the next level of the conversation.

5. Post Types That Naturally Lead to Sales

Some posts are just built to convert.
Here are a few of my favorites that make selling feel easy and natural.

5.1 Client Journey Posts

Not just “she loved it!”
We want the story.

Structure:

  1. Before – what they were struggling with
  2. What they tried – what wasn’t working
  3. What changed – your process or method
  4. After – the transformation
  5. Next step – how your reader can experience something similar

These always generate:

  • DMs like “this is me”
  • “Do you think this would work for my situation?”
  • Actual inquiries and sales

5.2 Relatable “I Used to Be You” Posts

You’re either talking to:

  • A past version of yourself
  • Or a client you deeply relate to

Examples:

  • “I used to overthink every single caption… until I realized this.”
  • “I used to rewrite my hooks 15 times before I hit post.”

You’re saying:

“I get why you’re stuck. I’ve been there. And I know the way out.”

Instant connection. Instant trust.

5.3 Behind-the-Scenes of Your Offer

Especially good in Stories.

Ideas:

  • Screenshot of a client Google Doc (blurred if needed)
  • Screen recording a membership portal
  • A voice note you’re sending to a client (with permission or anonymized)
  • A peek inside your course, templates, or process

This demystifies your offer and makes it feel tangible.
It’s not “mystery coaching magic”—it’s real stuff they can see.

5.4 Problem → Insight → Invitation Carousels

These do SO well.

Slide formula:

  1. Slide 1: “If you’re doing this, it’s probably why ___.”
  2. Slide 2:
    Explain why it’s happening
  3. Slide 3: “Here’s what to do instead.” (overview)
  4. Slide 4: “If you want the exact step-by-step, it’s inside ___. DM me WORD for details.”

You’re:

  • Giving real value
  • Showing them how to improve
  • Clearly positioning your offer as the shortcut

This works for service providers and product businesses.

Quick Recap

Let’s wrap it up:

  • Sales doesn’t have to be loud, shouty, or manipulative
  • Seeding your offer inside helpful content is subtle and powerful
  • Soft CTAs often convert better than needy or pushy ones
  • Certain post formats (client journeys, BTS, problem→insight→invite) naturally lead to sales

You’re not begging.
You’re inviting the right people to go deeper with you.

Your Action Step This Week

Here’s your homework:

  1. Take one regular educational post you already have or are planning.
  2. Edit the caption to seed your offer once:
    • Mention a client
    • Reference your method
    • Or add a soft CTA like: “If you want help with this, DM me the word __ and I’ll send you the next step.”
  3. Post it. See what happens. Track DMs, replies, and questions.

Then come tell me how it went 👀

DM me on Instagram @nicoleialeggio and let me know:

  • Which post you used
  • How you seeded your offer
  • Any messages or reactions you got

I’ll cheer you on and, if you want, help you tweak the next one.
