Social Media Manager vs. Influencer Manager: Which One Is Right for You?

Wanna work together? Cool, me too.

When I’m not on the ‘gram, I’m popping into your inbox to help you be more successful on IG

Should we make this official? I’ll send you my Instagram Growth Roadmap immediately just for hopping on.

If you’ve ever felt confused about what a social media manager actually does—or wondered if you need an influencer manager instead—you’re not alone.

As an Instagram strategist, I’ve had so many biz owners ask:

“Should I hire someone to grow my brand or someone to get me brand deals?”

Here’s the truth: both roles are incredibly valuable, but they serve very different purposes.

This post will help you:

  • Understand the core differences between SMMs and influencer managers
  • Know who to hire based on your goals
  • Get clarity on how both roles can work together (yes, even on one team!)

💼 What Does a Social Media Manager Do?

A social media manager (or in my case, an Instagram strategist) is responsible for growing your business—not just your personal brand.

Here’s what I do for my clients:

  • Build a custom Instagram strategy tied to business goals
  • Write captions, schedule posts, and film or edit reels
  • Track analytics, adjust what’s working, and optimize
  • Position you as an expert in your niche
  • Funnel traffic toward your offers, services, or products

My main focus is helping you build brand trust, stay consistently visible, and drive conversions—whether that’s bookings, email sign-ups, or purchases.

👩‍🎤 What Does an Influencer Manager or Talent Manager Do?

An influencer manager focuses on monetizing you as the product—not promoting your services.

They:

  • Pitch you to brands and negotiate partnerships
  • Handle contracts and campaign deliverables
  • Track results from brand deals (sales, reach, etc.)
  • Advise you on pricing and exclusivity terms
  • Help you build your portfolio as an influencer

Their entire job is to help you get paid to promote other brands.

They’re not optimizing your Instagram funnel. They’re not helping you with Reels or building your content strategy. Their lane is monetization through brand deals—period.

🤝 Can You Have Both?

Yes! One of my clients has both—and here’s how we split responsibilities:

I (the SMM):

  • Grow her brand
  • Strategize her content
  • Sell her digital offers and services

Her influencer manager:

  • Pitches brand partnerships
  • Handles contracts and campaign guidelines

We collaborate beautifully because we know our roles. For example, when she books a brand deal, her manager shares the brief with me, and I help bring the creative vision to life—whether it’s a Reel or carousel.

🧠 Ask Yourself These Key Questions:

To figure out what kind of support you need, ask:

1. Are you trying to sell an offer or sell yourself to brands?
→ If offer: You need a social media manager
→ If self: You need an influencer manager

2. Do you want help creating content or just want to get paid for it?
→ If help creating: You need a social media manager
→ If you love creating and just want to monetize: Go with an influencer manager
