Instagram is rolling out a series of game-changing updates in 2025, and whether you’re a business owner, content creator, or casual user, these changes can impact how you engage with your audience. In this post, I’ll break down the latest Instagram updates, how they work, and most importantly—how you can use them to grow your brand.
Let’s dive in!
1. Profile Grid Layout Update: Goodbye Squares, Hello Rectangles!
One of the biggest shifts is the new 4:5 aspect ratio for profile grids—moving away from the classic square format. This update has some users in a panic because their existing grid aesthetics are now off, with reels covers and graphics appearing misaligned.
💡 How to Prepare for This Change:
- Even if you don’t have the update yet (I don’t, but some of my clients do), start designing your posts in 4:5 instead of the traditional square.
- In Canva or other design apps, set your post dimensions to 1080×1350 pixels.
- Keep important text and visuals centered within a 4×4 space to ensure they look good in both the old and new layouts.
- Avoid placing crucial elements near the edges since Instagram crops slightly when displaying on profiles.
Some users are frustrated, but from what I’ve seen, content actually looks better and more immersive in this format. If you haven’t gotten the update yet, be patient—but start prepping now!
2. Reels Can Now Be Up to 3 Minutes Long
Instagram has increased the maximum Reels duration from 90 seconds to 3 minutes, making it easier for creators to share longer-form content, tutorials, and storytelling videos.
🚀 How to Use This Update Effectively:
- Not all Reels need to be 3 minutes! Only use the extended time if your content is compelling enough to keep people engaged.
- Structure your videos strategically—use quick edits, strong storytelling, and engaging visuals to hold attention.
- If your video starts to lose momentum at any point, your viewers will scroll away, so make every second count.
This update is great for deeper engagement, but you still need to hook your audience early to keep them watching!
3. Trial Reels: Test Content Before Posting
One of the most exciting new features is Trial Reels, which lets you test a Reel with a random group of non-followers before deciding to publish it to your audience. This allows you to experiment without affecting engagement on your main profile.
🔥 How to Get the Most Out of Trial Reels:
- Instead of testing new content, repost your best-performing content as a Trial Reel. This ensures Instagram is showing high-quality content to non-followers, increasing the likelihood of engagement and growth.
- Since Trial Reels don’t appear on your profile, they won’t spam your current audience—making them a great tool for exposure.
- Some creators report getting double or triple the number of followers from successful Trial Reels compared to their original post.
I’ve been testing this feature and have seen steady growth, though it’s still not as effective as regular Reels for me. However, some of my clients are seeing massive follower boosts using this strategy!
4. DM Keyword Search: A BIG IMPROVEMENT for Messaging
If you get tons of Instagram DMs, this update is going to save you so much time! Instagram is adding a keyword search feature within Direct Messages, allowing you to quickly locate conversations without having to scroll endlessly.
📩 Why This is Huge:
- Easily find important messages from followers, clients, or collaborations.
- Search for specific topics or questions instead of trying to remember usernames.
- Manage customer inquiries more efficiently if you run a business.
One of my clients receives hundreds of DMs daily, and this feature has been a lifesaver for organizing their inbox. I personally think Instagram should have introduced this years ago, but hey—better late than never!
5. Instagram’s New Video Editing App: “Edits”
Instagram is launching its own video editing app called Edits, designed to compete with apps like CapCut. This move makes sense, especially with the uncertainty around TikTok (and CapCut potentially being banned).
🎬 What to Expect from Edits:
- High-quality camera features
- Advanced video editing tools
- Performance analytics for content insights
Right now, you can pre-download the app, so it’ll be ready as soon as it launches. While we don’t know how it compares to CapCut yet, I’ll definitely be testing it out and reporting back!
6. Upcoming Features: What Might Be Next?
Instagram is also testing two potential updates that could roll out later this year:
🟣 Dedicated Story Highlights Tab
- Instead of appearing as circles above your feed, Story Highlights may move to a separate tab under your profile (next to Reels and Tagged).
- This might make profiles look cleaner, but I worry it could reduce visibility since people may forget to check the Highlights tab.
👎 Private Comment Downvote Feature
- This would allow creators to privately downvote negative or irrelevant comments, pushing them lower in the comment section.
- Unlike deleting comments, downvoting keeps them visible but limits their impact.
- This could be a great moderation tool for creators dealing with spam or hate comments.
We’ll have to wait and see how these features roll out, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on them!
Final Thoughts: Stay Ahead of Instagram’s Changes
Instagram is constantly evolving, and staying on top of updates can give you a competitive edge. Here’s what to do next:
✅ Adjust your content for the new grid layout (4:5 ratio)
✅ Use 3-minute Reels wisely—only if your content is engaging enough
✅ Test Trial Reels with high-performing content for more reach
✅ Make DM management easier with keyword search
✅ Keep an eye on Instagram’s new editing app to see if it replaces CapCut for you
